A hybrid of clothing swaps and Tupperware parties, kitchen swaps are starting to pop up in local neighborhoods and creative communities. The idea is simple: Bring in unwanted cookware and homemade food, and leave with something new and maybe a few new friends.
I recently attended my first-ever kitchen swap at Krrb headquarters in Brooklyn (a company that connects neighbors via its website for in-person transactions), and the experience couldnt have been more charming, even though my swap offerings paled in comparison to the lovingly made treats on display.
How It Works
Place your items on the table and fill out cards describing each one, noting any allergy information. Then browse the room, adding your name to the card for each item youre interested in, along with what you can offer as a trade. Once everyone has browsed, check your items card to locate interested traders. (Name tags come in very handy at this point!)
There were a lot of mouthwatering possibilities for trading, like these cherries in thyme-Madeira syrup and cherry pit cordial.

I brought a few kitchen supplies to trade, and my friend Jessica brought ridiculously large jars of peach compote and zucchini relish. She traded her relish for granola from Garden Granola in Brooklyn. Unfortunately, my pathetic measuring spoons and cups got no love.
